Week Five

Pew pew pew pew - Minutes

  • Meetings - 2 hours
  • T-shirt design mock-ups - 3-4 hours
  • Resource hunting (for flyers) 1-2 hours
  • Film watchin' n' reviewing' - 4 hours
  • Bake sale (I assume we count this?) - 4 hours

Bake Sale

My cupcakes killed it, I knew they would, because they were adorable.

Towards the end of the sale, whenever someone claimed to have no money, we let a facebook like stand in for their payment! Last I heard, we got 20 new likes on facebook, so I think it worked?

T-shirts!!

Here are my favorite designs from this week!

The beetle wing design falls in with some of the images/motifs/themes that Jon and I have decided for the overall media campaign. Which, speaking of....

MEDIA DESIGN - PT. II

The better-er-ing

So this week's 1-on-1 slash brainstorm brought another break-through because we are stars. We settled on a more cohesive theme or idea: evolution! As in, the evolution of the organic to the non-organic. Heavily inspired by Ben McCarthy's paper on new digital breakthroughs. Here's a quick smattering of idears.

  • Evolution
  • Pixelation
  • Collage
  • Organic
    • Beetles
    • Moths
    • Eyes
    • "Pieces" - so maybe other dissected sort of natural imagery
  • Digital
  • Engraving printing (replicated digitally, of course)

Week Four

Big changes this week, so I've been working on rebounding for that.

This week's minutes:

 Weekly Meeting - 1 Hour
Review of papers - I don't even know
Video Race campaign - 5+ Hours
Bake sale baking (yum) - 3+ Hours
Additional design research/misc work - 1 Hour

Bake sale

I just wanted to share that I made super chocolately cupcakes and that they're delicious. AND ONLY 200 CALORIES!!!

Video Race

Video race has dominated my life this week, but hey -- at least I have some stuff to show for it.

Lorem ipsum represent
Here's what we're currently looking at. Right now I feel like the colors are reading a little too UNCW-y, but what if that is a good thing? Have some balance issues to work out anyways, so I can work on colors then.
Also, we are now looking to do an animation instead of a video. Word.

I'd also like to take a moment for us all to look at this beautiful shoe.

General design

Beetles arrived in the mail today! Excitement! Coming soon I'll be working more in-depth with Tasha to figure out a wicked but affordable t-shirt design.

Week Three

Week three, sanity starting to slip...

First up, here's some cool poster/flyers from other film festivals around the world:

This weeks minutes, now in bullet point format!
  • PR group meeting  30-45minutes
  • Design meeting with Jon 2hrs
  • Sample color palette design 2hrs
  • Design research  1-2hrs
  • Watercolors* 3+hrs
  • Video race poster design 2 hrs
  • Beetles!* 1-2hrs
  • Video scoring (I don't even know)

 * On this week's design meeting

An unreasonable amount of progress was made this Friday.

First off, we designed a super-flexible, pulp art inspired color palette:
Apologies to Mr. Neil Krug
This is going to be a huge part of our upcoming Design Plan for 2013. We also explored different design elements, both thematic and images.

Final design elements include:
  • Watercolor textures
  • 'Double exposure' matte effects (especially for moving media)
  • Beetles and beetle wings! Specifically, southeast asian jewel/flower beetles.
  • Pulp art
  • Galactic/planetary imagery
  • Abstract geometry -- Astrolabe inspired
On the beetle note, I've actually ordered a couple of preserved beetles. All stock images were limiting or had terrible terms of use, so we'll be making our own media!

We'll have one of each of these little buggers. The images are off of the supplier's site, and the ones on the left aren't 100% accurate to species, but are going to be those colors. They should be in by the end of the week and should be ready to photograph by this weekend. So, rejoice! We have a 'mascot' again!

Coming up this week is the design for the Valentine's Day Sale poster. Meeting with AJ to talk about that design, will be doing some relevant research in the meantime.

I'll also be pitching multiple designs for the video race poster on Tuesday, and hope to have that finalized by Friday.

Week Two

1 Hour 1 Take Video Race

Things are getting quicker on 1hr1tk. This weekend we shot the promo on greenscreen. Once it's edited, it'll be handed to me for special effects / "movie magic".

An oblique sneak-peek!
We're staying with the theme discussed from last week. Marge and Josh are gonna look super "MINT!"

Visions Advertisement

I've been brushing up on photoshop some more and doing some more tutorials. Trying to hone in on the professionalism and presentation.

An interesting practice logo/title will be posted here once I have access to a mac.

Week One

1 Hour 1 Take Advertising

This week I met with Josh P. to discuss the commercial and tie-in flyer for the 1 hour video race. Right now the biggest portion, for me, is working out tone and audience. The two are inexplicably connected; you have to figure them out simultaneously. We want to target community members, visiting filmmakers, but especially UNCW students -- film studies or otherwise. Targeting students is a big factor, so we will be making energetic, fun videos with vivid colors and a cool 80's video game throw-back.

Test design

Visual research at this stage is very important! There are 1000s of photoshop and after effects tutorials on the web -- doing a few at this point has been a huge gain.

Fun fact: you cannot reserver the blackbox for MLK weekend.

Visions Advertising

At this point, I am communicating with Jon W. about his vision (ha!) as PR coordinator. We agree that a sleek, professional look is best, but I still intend to bring some energy with my designs. A big challenge is brand integration. Hopefully I'll have some mock-ups or drafts within the next week.

Visions bumpers!

Now these are fun - simple, animated bumps to play during downtime at visions. The intention is to make them loopable, so they can just be left to play on repeat. After effects is vital in this area.

My idea at this stage is variety. People want something interesting to look at while nothing else is happening, so I've been working on ideas for different "themes" and designs.

  • Watery - Visions logo rises out of water w/ reflection
  • Scrabble - "Visions Film Festival" gets written out in scrabble tiles
  • Retro-chic - Bright colored, simple moving logo with bounce
  • Bokeh - Bokeh bokeh bokeh!
  • Geometric - triangular design
  • Space - stars, nebulas, and "space clouds"
In the meantime, here's a "rough draft" of the first bumper!
